Microsoft announced today that they intend to buy the Internet phone provider Skype for $8.5 billion.
While software giant Microsoft has purchased other companies in the past, this marks the first time they have announced an acquisition of another firm in five years. It is also the largest purchase in the company’s history.
Skype was last purchased by eBay in the year 2005 for $2.6 Billion after being founded in the year 2003. There are currently over 170 million users connected to the service.
