Freelance Photographer Wanted

Grace can come when life is at its most painful. Cheryl Haggard, of Littleton, Colorado, had a moment of grace at a most unbearable time in her life. When she and her husband were faced with losing their child, Maddux, they made a decision. There was no hope and it was time to take her newborn infant off of life support. Cheryl’s husband, in a moment of clarity, called a local photographer, Sandy Puc’, and asked that she come and take pictures of their baby. The result was a beautiful studio quality portfolio of a precious child and a new mission. Since then and in only 6 short years, Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, a non profit organization founded by Haggard and Puc’, has enlisted over 7000 volunteer professional photographers from the United States and 25 other countries to document the final hours and minutes of a dying child’s life and even those tender moments after life has ended.

How to Request a Photographer

Requesting the services of a Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep photographer is not a decision that the hospital makes. Hospitals simply keep information on the organization and make that information available to a family in the time of need. A photographer within the network is contacted, regardless of the hour, and goes to the hospital where he or she conducts a private and sensitive portrait session. The portraits are professionally retouched with the greatest of care and when the product is complete, the family is presented with a full resolution DVD or CD that can be used to print portraits, often set to music, as their gift. All of the talent and time of the photographers is donated. These volunteer professionals recognize that their compassionate gift of photography is invaluable to a grieving family.

"Sometimes the hospital doesn’t see the baby as presentable. We can do a lot of work in editing to make the baby perfect," Heather Wamble, a professional photographer from Middle Tennessee that volunteers her time says. "Our goal is to make the baby perfect. We want to be sure the child is documented with dignity."
