Not a lot of romantic crime fighting partners are featured on network TV shows these days. But in the 1970's and 80's, there were several hit shows that centered on male and female partnerships. These programs contained elements of romance, mystery, and comedy and typically had very glamorous settings. Here are five mystery/romance shows that developed huge followings and made their permanent mark on television history.

McMillan and Wife (1971-1977)

This witty series with Rock Hudson and Susan Saint James ran as part of the rotating NBC Sunday Mystery Movie Night. Hudson played San Francisco Police Commissioner Stewart McMillan, and James starred as his beautiful wife, Sally, who had a remarkable knack for discovering crimes. The sensible McMillan and flighty Sally were an ultra trendy couple who traded banter while investigating robberies, murders, and other forms of intrigue. In between, they attended fashionable parties and charitable events.

According to Tim Brooks and Earle Marsh in The Complete Directory To Primetime Network and Cable TV Shows: 1946-Present, McMillan and Sally’s relationship was based on the one shared by Nick and Nora Charles in The Thin Man movies and TV series (648).
